Something’s not working? Start here Guide

Most problems show up in the Health check on your Mac. Open Kin Server and go to Settings → Troubleshooting. You’ll see one row for each part of Kin: green is healthy, amber needs a look, and gray is not in use. Any row that needs attention says what’s wrong and what to do about it.

If a row suggests it, restart Kin Server:

  1. Click the Kin icon in your Mac’s menu bar, at the top of the screen.
  2. Choose Quit Kin Server…, then Stop server and quit. Your family can’t reach Kin until you open it again.
  3. Open Kin Server from your Applications folder.
  4. Back in Settings → Troubleshooting, click Run again.

While you’re in the menu bar, make sure Start Kin when this Mac starts is checked, so Kin comes back on its own after your Mac restarts.

Before you email us Guide

A few details help us fix things fast:

  • A diagnostics report. On your Mac, open Kin Server, go to Settings → Troubleshooting and click Save diagnostics report. It saves to your Downloads folder. It includes versions, the state of each part of Kin, and recent server activity, never anything anyone wrote.
  • Your versions. Kin Server shows its version in Settings → Updates, like “Kin Server 1.0.0 (build 36)”. The iPhone app’s version is in TestFlight.
  • What happened. What you were doing, what you expected, and what you saw instead. A screenshot helps a lot.

Then email it all to hello@meetkin.app. Or use Report a bug in the app, which fills in the technical details for you.

What does this message mean? Guide
  • “Kin found something at this address, but it isn’t your Kin Server.” Your phone checks your Mac’s identity every time it connects. This is expected if you replaced or reinstalled your Mac without choosing Moving from another Mac. Set the phone up again: in Kin, open Family → Log out of server (or tap Use a different server on the sign-in screen), then pair with the QR code. If your Mac hasn’t changed, don’t enter your password. Email us instead.
  • “This household moved to a new Mac.” This shows on your old Mac after a move. Your family now uses the new Mac, and everything on the old one stays untouched. If the new Mac is gone and you need the old one back, click Make this Mac the active server again and enter your Kin password.
  • “Kin’s model is busy right now.” Kin is working through other requests, or its model got stuck. It restarts on its own, so try again in a moment.
  • “Kin’s model isn’t on your server yet.” The model has to download before Kin can answer. Tap Download the model in the chat, or an admin can download it from Family → Server Settings.
  • Offline. Kin can’t reach your Mac right now and is showing your saved data. It reconnects on its own. If it doesn’t, see Kin says it’s offline.
  • Server update available. A new version of Kin Server is ready. See Updating Kin, step by step.
Kin is slow, or says it’s busy
How fast Kin replies depends on your Mac, and Kin picks the best model your Mac can run comfortably. If Kin says it’s busy, wait a moment and tap Try again. If the model ever gets stuck, Kin Server restarts it on its own within a few minutes. To make replies start faster, turn on Keep Kin instantly ready in Family → Server Settings.
Kin says its model isn’t downloaded
Kin can’t answer until its model is on your Mac. Tap Download the model in the chat, or on your Mac open Settings → Model. It’s a few gigabytes and downloads once. Bigger models give richer answers but need more memory, and Kin only lets you pick the ones your Mac can run well.
