Kin Terms of Service

These terms are between you and New Standard Technology, Inc., a Delaware corporation. They cover the Kin software: Kin Server, which runs on a Mac you own, the Kin app on phones and other devices, and Kin for Mac. Please read them. They are short.

Kin is free, and what you have is yours for good

Kin is free to use. There is no purchase, no subscription, and no fee.

This version of Kin, the software on your Macs and your phones, is yours for good. It keeps working for as long as you choose to run it, with no charge and no expiry date on your key. If we ever offer paid upgrades, they will be additions on top of what you have today. Nothing you already have will be taken away or put behind a fee, and choosing not to pay for an upgrade changes nothing about what you have now. A paid tier would come with a new version of these terms, and Kin would ask the household's admin to agree to it before anything changes.

Your license key

Each household uses one license key. The key is tied to the Mac it was activated on. You may move it to a new Mac using the tools built into Kin; the old Mac is released when you do. Do not share your key outside your household.

Your data is yours

Everything Kin stores lives on your own Mac, encrypted with keys we never have. You can export it, move it, or delete it whenever you like. We claim no rights to it, and we cannot see it. Our Privacy Policy says exactly what does and does not reach us.

Using Kin

Use Kin for your household's own purposes. Do not use it to break the law, to harm others, or to attack or overload our relay and other services. Adults in a household are responsible for the accounts they create for children and for what their household shares with connected families.

Connected families

When you connect your household to another, messages and shared memories travel between the two Macs. Each household controls what it shares and can disconnect at any time. We are not a party to what households share with each other.

The software is provided as is

Kin is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any warranty that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose. Kin's answers come from a model running on your Mac and can be wrong. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, financial, or safety decisions.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, New Standard Technology, Inc. is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of Kin. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Kin, which is zero.

Our services

Our relay, address-lookup, push forwarding, licensing, and update services are provided free and may change or pause. Once your key is activated, Kin keeps working at home without them. Activating a key, or moving it to a new Mac, needs the licensing service once; away-from-home features need the others while you use them.

Changes to these terms

Each version of these terms has a number and an effective date at the top. If we change them, Kin shows the household's admin the new version on the Mac, each time they open Kin Server until they agree, and an update that comes with a new version waits until they have. They can also keep the version they have.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
