Messages & memories

Conversations, what Kin remembers, connected families, and notifications.

How do I keep Kin out of a conversation?
Open the conversation and tap its name at the top. Turn off Kin in this conversation. Kin won’t respond there or remember anything from it.
What does Kin remember, and how do I change it?
Kin remembers useful things from your chats, like plans, preferences and important dates. You can see and delete memories in Family → Memories. You can also just tell Kin in a chat, like “that’s not right, my sister’s birthday is in June,” and Kin will update what it remembers.
How do I connect with another family?
Your household’s admin can connect from Family → Community → Connect a family. Create an invite and share it with a family you know, or choose I have an invite if they sent you one. You’ll both see a security code. Check that it matches. Each family’s data stays on its own Mac.
Messages to another family aren’t arriving Guide

Messages between families travel from your Kin Server to theirs. Kin shows where each message is:

  • Queued (Waiting on server in the delivery details): still on your Kin Server. Their family’s server hasn’t taken it yet. It goes on its own as soon as their server is reachable, so nothing is lost.
  • Sent: on a Kin Server, waiting for their phone to pick it up.
  • Delivered: on their phone.
  • Read: they opened it. Only shown when they share read receipts.

If messages stay Queued, their Mac is probably off, asleep, or offline. Ask them to check that Kin Server is running, and to run the Health check on their Mac.

If messages arrive blank or only go one way, one of the two Kin Servers is probably out of date. Both families should update (see Updating Kin, step by step), then quit and reopen Kin Server.

Notifications aren’t arriving Guide

Check these in order:

  1. Kin’s own switch. Each phone turns notifications on for itself. In Kin, open Family → Personalization → Notifications and turn on Push notifications.
  2. Your iPhone’s settings. Go to Settings → Notifications → Kin and turn on Allow Notifications.
  3. Quiet hours. If you set quiet hours in the same place in Kin, Kin doesn’t send notifications during those hours. Messages still arrive in the app.
  4. Focus. A Focus on your iPhone, like Do Not Disturb or Sleep, can hold notifications back.
  5. Your Mac. Notifications come from Kin Server on your Mac, sealed before they leave it. If your Mac is off, asleep or offline, nothing can be sent until it’s back.
